Phil Taylor, Michael Van Gerwen or someone else? Phil Taylor, Michael Van Gerwen or someone else?

2014 PDC World Darts Championship 13.12.13 - 01.01.14

from / DARTS / Wednesday, December 11 2013 15: 25

The time has come for the last big tournament of the year for darts, which like every year is World Darts Championship, which Ladbrokes is sponsoring this year.

As the last tournament of the year, it is the most important, since the last impression is always left. In fact, the peculiarity that has to be done during a festive season covering the Christmas season and having the final on New Year's Eve makes this tournament a truly enormous feast. It is a dream for many people around the world to get a magic ticket to find that New Year's Eve at Alexandra Palace.

This is the 21 version of the tournament and the draw has already been made and you can see it in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_PDC_World_Darts_Championship#Last_64 . Phil Taylor is the champion last year and you are calling to defend the title he took last year in an epic final against the other big name of the sport, Michael Van Gerwen, who then made the bam in the field, since the odds he gave him to conquer the tournament was at 38. But the fight that stole the show in that tournament was the semi-final match between Phil Taylor and Raymond Van Barneveld, where there was a fight between the two holy monsters in the field and virtually marked the beginning of the fall of Raymond Van Barneveld's career.

Phil Taylor is the champion of the institution, since he counts 14 conquests at 17 finals (basically 16 titles, but the first two tournaments were not official). He is the holy monster of the institution and the sport and perhaps one of the greatest athletes worldwide in all sports and obviously the fact that he has not only participated in 4 from 21 finals of the event says a lot about his value. The others who have won the title are Adrian Lewis (2), John Part (2), Dennis Priestley and Raymond Van Barneveld. But let us come to this year's event as well.

The draw is particularly favorable to Phil Taylor, as he is on the top of the board and seems to be comfortable to the semifinals, since the toughest opponents are Robert Thorton and Wes Newton, players who have to overcome any great looks they have dreamed of to make it difficult for Taylor. So, it does not make much sense to look for the surprise here, since 1.25 that is given to reach the semi-final Taylor, as sure as it may be, is a small performance.

There is a lot of interest in the second board, as there are two very strong names, the British Andy Hamilton and the Australian Simon Whitlock, while there is also the name of Kim Huybrechts, a Belgian who is the rising force in the sport and who faces his brother in the premiere Ronny. Also on the board we can see a stable player, Paul Nicholson, who, while he has talent, never managed to surpass his ceiling. So here is the interest, since Whitlock reaching the semifinals gives 3 to bet365 and 2.88 to Paddy Power, while for anyone who wants to chase the surprise, Kim Huybrechts is offered at 5 in sportingbet. Whitlock will have no problem reaching the quarterfinals, while Huybrechts is expected to clash with Hamilton in the 32nd phase, so it is more worthwhile to bet on the Huybrechts' 5-pointer.

There is a slight panic on the third board, as the big star Michael Van Gerwen, as well as the experienced Raymond Van Barneveld and the rising Dave Chisnall, who reached the final of the World Gran Prix this year, participate. Among them is the constant value of the Scotsman Gary Anderson. There is certainly no questioning the superiority of Van Gerwen, who managed to overcome the belly he did in the middle of the year and reach the Players Championship final a month ago and beat Taylor there. But there is a great peculiarity here, as he may face the evil demon Dave Chisnall, who, where he found him this year, leveled him. So if anyone wants to take a risk on this board, Dave Chisnall is at 7.5 at sportingbet and 7 at Bet365 and Paddy Power.

And reaching the fourth board we see a panic again. Many big names, the legend Adrian Lewis, the constant James Wade and close to them Justin Pipe who is in excellent condition having reached the semifinals of the two previous tournaments that took place in October and November. Definitely Adrian Lewis is the big favorite here, the draw easily sends him to the quarterfinals. His strong scoring is able to pay any opponent, but as always he has a problem at the end of the leg, as he has difficulty hitting doubles. Based on his form and presence in the last tournaments, Justin Pipe can not give 9 to Bet365, but there is always the possibility of losing to Wade at 16. However, it is worth a small bet to reach the semifinals.

To summarize, the individual bets proposed on the board are:

  • Simon Whitlock to win 2nd quarter @ 3, bet365 2/10
  • Kim Huybrechts to win 2nd quarter @ 5, sportingbet 2 / 10
  • Dave Chisnall to win 3rd quarter @ 7.5, sportingbet 1 / 10
  • Justin Pipe to win 4th quarter @ 9, bet365 1/10

Beyond that, the big favorite for the tournament is Phil Taylor. The Englishman is in a fantastic situation this year and the draw sends him easily to the final. The 1.9 performance given to Paddy Power to win the tournament is the best on the market, but it's hard for me to play because a bad night, a double failure, a little lack of concentration can be defeated. But it is a fact that someone expects Taylor to get relatively comfortable in the final and when Taylor reaches the final he loses only 3 times to 17. Second big favorite is the tournament number 2, that is, Michael Van Gerwen, who just a month ago got a tournament from Taylor, but generally this year does not seem to be in a desperate situation as it was in the first half of 2013. The performance that gives it reaches 5. Someone worthy of betting is Adrian Lewis at 7 at sportingbet, as if he reaches the semi-final there is likely to meet Van Gerwen, who has somehow made him a client now and has created him a small block. But because a lot of players have lost their stability lately and the events are not as predictable as it used to be in the past, one can chase surprises to those we mentioned before they can reach the semifinals. By betting on each way, we can actually get half the return if the player reaches the final. So, for those who want to take some risk:

  • Dave Chisnall to win the tournament @ 41, Paddy Power 0.5 / 10 ew (total bet 1 / 10)
  • Kim Huybrechts to win the tournament @ 51, Paddy Power 0.5 / 10 ew (total bet 1/10)
  • Justin Pipe to win the tournament @ 81, Bet365 0.5 / 10 ew (total bet 1/10)

Closing this presentation for the PDC World Darts Championship 2014, a special bet that shows great value is having 9-dart finish. As I wrote earlier, this tournament is a celebration and players always give their best. Last year we had 2 9-darters in the last two tournaments of the year although many players approached an 9-darter they did not manage to do it, but everything shows that at the last tournament of the year we will have 9 dart finish at least once. There is also a prize of 30000 pounds for anyone who does it.

  • PDC World Darts Championship 2014 9 dart finish: Yes @ 1.80, Bet365 6/10

    Good luck
