The day that will bring cracks, splits and changes in what we knew so far in European football has probably arrived.
The "bomb" of the big clubs of European football "exploded" as the creation of the European Super League was announced with 12 groups to be its founding members.
The news of course goes around the world and is the first issue of major newspapers.
What are the 12 clubs?
Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Real, Barcelona, Atletico, Juventus, Milan and Inter announced that they are creating their own League, against the Champions League, something that is logically expected to create rapid developments.
The plan wants 8 more teams to enter this closed event whose names have not yet been made known. The president of the new league is Florentino Perez and Vice Presidents Joel Glazer and Andrea Anielli. Note that Real Madrid and Manchester United pioneered the creation of the closed league.
Her first reaction FIFA
Fifa has already taken a stand on this move and made clear statements: "We reject the closed European separatist league."
Also, what they imply is that the punishments (if imposed) on the clubs will be very heavy.
The Format of the new event
- 20 participating teams along with the 15 founding members and a qualifying mechanism for five more teams each year, based on the achievements of the previous year.
- Midweek matches with all participating teams continuing to play in the respective national leagues, respecting the domestic calendar which is the heart of the game.
- Starting in August, with the 20 teams split into two groups of 10, to play home and away matches. The top three of each group automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The teams that will occupy the 4th and 5th place will play in playoffs two matches for the remaining places of the quarterfinals.
- The knockouts will continue until the final in May, which will be a single match and will be held on neutral ground.
The corresponding one for the women's teams of the clubs will follow as soon as possible, guided by the progress and development of the sport.
