American Football
In recent years, a pay-TV channel has been accustomed to displaying the US-based play-off games. Since the date of the Super Bowl is approaching (February 7) let's see a few things about the sport that makes our transatlantic friends call it with a different term (soccer) and not like the rest of the world (football) our favorite football .
HISTORY
According to relevant historians, American football has its roots in English rugby and is considered a cousin of our own football.
In the middle of 1800 at Princeton University, students were playing a game called ballown. Slowly with contacts with other universities that each added a feature and with the influence of Walter Camp, who is considered the founder of American football, the sport took a form close to today. 1895 records the first professional contract, while 1920 established the American Football Federation, where two years later it has created the National Football Championship (NFL) that has existed to date. A top race of all time is considered the final of 1958 between Baltimore Colts (ancestors of this year's contenders) and New York Jayad in Gianki Standium where he was broadcast live by NBC and is believed to have helped in the enormous subsequent TV success.
KEY RULES
Each stadium is 360 foot length (120 yards) and 160 width. Each team defends at one end an area called '' enter '' and attacks the opponent. In every '' enter '' there is a large metallic shell like a giant slingshot the end. The attacking team aims to find the ball in the opponent '' enter '' but to be in the hands of a player. As it attacks, it has to travel 10 yards at a maximum of 4 attempts (the so-called Dounes). If it does not succeed the possession goes to the opposing team. Each team can travel two yards in either a "racing" game (the ball gets a quick, versatile and strong player with every contact and tries to avoid as many opponents as possible and earn as much distance as possible) or with a game of "passion" (the "cheerleader" of the team's brains, so in the movies they have the most beautiful cheerleader until the gay hero has eaten it, with a long pass trying to find a free teammate to the region of the opponent). If the hand does not end up in the hands of a player but the ground is considered incomplete and the game repeats from the same point as the attackers have lost a '' down '' attempt. If everything in the air reaches the hands of a defense is considered to be stolen and possession changes. Also, if slipping from the hands of an attacker on the ground ('' fabl '') is considered to be claimed.
Defenders can stop 'attacking' the attackers, ie immobilize them on the ground, dropping on them with their arms outstretched.
Anyway, if the ball reaches the opponent's "ent-zoon" we have a "touch-down" score which counts for 6 points and is followed either by a close shot that the ball must pass between the goal mentioned above and counts for 1 point or from trying to find the ball again in the "ent-zone" with a single attempt and if he succeeds he gives 2 points (conversion). Also, if a group is approaching the box and finds it difficult to continue (the 4th attempt-effort usually return the ball to the opponent with a free kick) can experience '' Field-goal '' (long shot aiming again ball to go through the goal) and if successful gives 3 points.
There are a number of other rules that would not be worth mentioning here. We must note that each team consists of 11 players on the pitch. The aggressive team of each club consists of quite different players from the defensive (they have a different coach) and there are also "special" teams that undertake special missions (return of a goal or a goal-goal, etc.). However, tactics and systems are of particular importance for this, and coaches wear headphones with which they consult with their specific co-workers at the stage informing them that the opposing team is standing.
FASHION CHAMPIONSHIP
The annual final of each championship (super bowl) is considered the top TV event as it gathers more viewing than any other league final. This is because, like all the playoffs, it is a single fight and not both sides of the teams, as is the case, for example, in basketball. In this year's final, held in Miami's neat "San Lady of Stylium", New Orleans Sands are rewarded with Indianapolis Colts. The latter, relying on starring starfather Peyton Manning (whose father had made a great career in his upcoming rivals), are considered to be this year's favorite and count 2 conquests from 1967 which was the first year that the final was named "super-bull '' (after the union of 2 top events). For the "Saints" of New Orleans led by Drew Brius will be the maiden appearance.
US FOOTBALL OUTSIDE AMERICA
The fact that in Greece this sport is totally unknown does not mean that the same applies to the rest of the world.
Organized leagues are in countries like Japan, New Zealand, Mexico and Europe in countries like England, Spain, Germany, Norway and Hungary. The American Federation is trying to make the sport more widely known while the 3 World Cup has been held (4 years each) with Japan counting 2 conquests 1999 and 2003 and the American National Team that had not participated in 2 first to conquer the last 2007.
GREEK PRESENCE
And yet at least two Greek players have gone through history because of their presence on American football pitches.
Chris Farasopoulos, born in Piraeus at the end of 1940, was selected in 1971's third round of XNUMX and for a three-year period he successfully competed in both New Jet's New Jersey and New Orleans' Sheds.
Three decades ago, Ikaria Gust Zarnas fought Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers. In fact, 1975 (25 years before his death) entered the College Hall of Fame of college football for his performance with the jersey of the University of Ohio State.
STUDENT PLAYERS
It is difficult to distinguish some of the great players who have crossed the American stadiums. But two need special reference.
2002 magazine "Sporting News" published a list of 100 top players in the history of American Football in the opinion of several specialists.
At the top he was the name of James Nathanel Brown or better known as Jim Brown. Brown has been playing for Cleveland for eight years and has just retired to the top of his career. Those who confront him are simply "naked" as he is the only player who statistically "ran" with the ball in his hands (the strong and flexible player we said) over 100 yards per game. It is no coincidence that he is considered one of the supreme athletes ever to America, regardless of sports. He also dealt with actresses (most importantly, his participation in the epic film "And 12 was a slap").
Of course, we can not fail to mention even the biggest "quortebrak" that is no other than the legendary Joe Montana. The composure with which he gave the ball at the end of the game was proverbial. It is believed that with his passes in the last round he turned over 30 match during his 12 year-1979-1992) career with the San Francisco Fighters Nannies, which led to the 1981,1984,1988,1989 four league tournament.
PERSONAL AND NEGATIVE TO MAKE THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL GAMES IN GREECE
VERTICAL (+)
A) With each team's team consisting of 30-40 players at least, during each transfer period the fans would party with a large number of team transfers, while the sports newspapers would have a phone book size to cover all scenarios.
B) With the dependence of the players on this sport, helmet and protectors, that even the "naked" fan coins, lighters, siphons will fly, there will be no risk of injury and the state will feel proud of her work.
C) As we have said, each team has a central coach and different for defense and attack, so the talk shows on the radio would be eight hours so that every friend of his team can put himself in the comfort of the mistakes of each of the three coaches from the general analysis of the match.
D) There is no penalty! That is, there is but it has the meaning of a penalty that simply forces the team to cover more yards. So, a ravenous raven, as well as feeling at the Phalerian stage, to see what you will invent ...
E) The analysis of tactics by great personalities from other places could be of great interest. That is:
- My dear old child, he puts the guillotine on the lime, and I get on the shaft to be a priest. Or
-I'm gonna be a "tortorer-dak" who have it? He can not succeed elephant in the hall will take out all? Hanging on the Constitution wants ...
NEGATIVELY(-)
A) Familiarity with the new regulations will not be easy. In the first match that will take place in the first normal (for this sport hard for the other) skit, half will ask red and the other half unsportsman.
B) Do we exclude from our past a country where even members of the government have come to the forefront of such actions that there will be no attempts and successful spelling of the coach's talks on the systems?
C) The referees in some cases have the right to see the replay in critical decisions and to discuss (no, it is not allowed for the fourth of the stands to determine if the "touchdown" counts, these are only done here), so the favorite attack will be lost << The referee does not have the opportunity to see a repetition of the phase >> and so our Sunday will become poorer.
