Tribute No 10 - Darren Aronofsky

After a long time I said I would write another tribute to a great director. Also, I will freshen a little the tributes of others as some have released new films, which I have not written.
Ο Darren Aronofsky is an American director, who with the few films he has directed has given us samples of excellent directorial talent. Six are all and all of his films, but they all deserve our attention and some are diamonds.

π (1998)

His first film had something from Greece. The title. The π of course it refers to the number 3.14 .......... and reveals the "scientific" theme of the film. But only in the title it refers. The movie has nothing to do with this number but with another number of 216 digits that many are looking for.
A protagonist is a Jewish mathematician who is searching for it and looking for it and looking for it. His hard idea is done. And in essence, what is left to us is that the genius from paranoia is very little.
A particular black-and-white film, similar to David Lynch's debut with Eraserhead, although I dare say that this is a bit better here. But surely, it reveals the directional look of Arofsky, which is extremely interesting and this will be seen later.

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Two years later comes a shocking movie. A powerful film, a fast-paced film that exposes the tale of television, especially video games (I think she and the Truman Show is the loudest there is for the can), the tale of drugs, pinch and pills and generally "squeezes" some things with our eyes.
In addition, Clint Mansell's splendid music dresses the film fantastically and gives us a super effect.

The Fountain (2006)

This was the only one of Arodovsky that I had not seen and I saw it now. I did not like it. It was not ugly but it was not what I expected from this director. Basically this alternation between real-fantastic and even 3 levels was the one that tired me more. More of it suits what it does in other films, passing from the real world to mind games, despite this fountain style.
I believe that the story if it were a book, where you have the opportunity to "spread" as much as you want, would be fantastic! But in a movie of 1,5 hours, the margins were too narrow for him to unfold properly what he had in mind.

The Wrestler (2008)

A controversial film. An unknown Micky Rourke. The blind is not something special. The performances are very well-directed. Personally, I did not find anything special about her, but she was not indifferent. You see her comfortable, just for the roles.

Black Swan (2010)

Masterpiece! I do not have to write anything else. Anyone who has not seen it (and likes this movie style) must do it anyway.

Noah (2014)

What did you think? Only 300 & Leonidas, Alexander the Great and Troy? no gentlemen. There is also Noah !! Aronofsky's latest film is about Noah, his ark, and the Flood. I do not know why the director decided to make this kind of film, I think it does not suit him. And he has nothing to tell us.
A historical-mythological movie, based on the well-known history of the Old Testament (with a few exaggerations and touches of the director). It is worth seeing it only as overproduction, filming the story of God and the very good cast.

As soon as the fountain is over and I say that it is a comfortable film by 9 / 10 .. (With the exception of Noah I have not seen), by classifying his films I would put Black Cynno (his most mature film in all respects) Rebecca (a movie that influenced the filmmakers of 00s) and Fountain (the most beautiful visually but perhaps with the most beautiful meaning and the best music) together in the first place ...

Just below are the other three. Anyway, he is certainly the three most important American scriptwriters of the 21 century.

my only objection is that it gets too tight and stretches it a lot (for a movie). so I wrote that a book would be perfect. or in a movie he could do it in vol I / vol II where he would not have tired so much. teaspa, great cinematic - I agree.

Mother! (2017)

Two wonderful actors, Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, star in the latest film by a great director, Darren Aronofsky. And we all expect a shocking film. But what happens in reality? I think here the director has made the same mistake he made in Fountain. The script is unique. He sets it up wonderfully, but somehow the exaggeration spoils the movie. The above actors are a couple, living in isolation, and suddenly different types are coming home. But there came much more than we should, and so many unnecessary things happen. If I kept it a bit, in what is happening inside a home, I think it would be another masterpiece. This exaggeration broke me somehow ...

The Whale (2022)

It's been a few years until we see Aronofsky's next film. The Whale was released last year (2022) and a while ago he won the Best Actor Oscar for Brendan Fraser's performance. He also won the Makeup Oscar, after the guys managed to make the protagonist look like a real whale. The film takes place over a period of one week and in the rooms (not to mention only one) of a house, where the protagonist lives as he cannot go anywhere with the weight he carries. But with those who visit him, the director manages to make a strong collage of emotions, meanings, trust and not, love and not and much, much more.
Fraser deservedly won the Oscar, since his performance is great and the film is very strong and tough, one of the best that the American director has taught us.
