On an island in the ocean, on a deserted peak
65 Irishman Neil Jordan from Sligo (probably Sligo Rovers : twis:) is a very dear director of mine or rather a director who deals with a favorite subject, the Irish Liberation Army and everything that happens on the island of Ireland in general. From 1982 until now he has given great films, he has also given "potatoes" but overall his work finds me a friend. A total of 17 feature films, several short films and TV series (with the best known of them Blows). So my 8 tribute is for this great Sligorian.

Angel (1982)

Unfortunately, I did not see this first film of the director and I could not find her anywhere to see her. If anyone has a way to find her let me know. However, from the beginning Jordan deals with the issue I mentioned above. A police thriller in Northern Ireland is this film, starring Stephen Rea, from Belfast, who plays in several of his compatriot's plays, either as protagonist or in second roles.
I found a scene on youtube from the movie and she will see ....

The company of wolves (1984)

Two years later, the Irish director gives us a fairy tale. A different look at the fairy tales of Kokkinoskoufitsa, with a lot of imagination and exaggeration. Jordan is used to directing (and often writing) such films, which I would say is not my sympathy.
Here the wolf gang makes an extreme fairy tale far beyond imagination.

Mona Lisa (1986)

This is a film by which Jordan, at the beginning of his career, took the step he needed. Starring Bob Hoskins, starring Michael Caine. The film is neither IPA nor fantasy. It's a movie that deals with the underworld, and the protagonists get involved in a tug that Hodgson, as the driver of Cathy Tyson's luxury prostitute, tries to solve it and release it.

High Spirits (1988)

Four years after the Company of Wolves, the director gives us another story of fantasy. Only here enriches it with English humor, much like Monty Pythons. A castle that its owner attempts in every way to save him from seizing and conceals all kinds of slap. With enough exaggeration, the film is a swarm of blunders and unlikely situations until we reach the final stage where the fake ghosts of the castle eventually become true!
I can not say that I really liked it, beyond 100 's plate and chavele.

We're No Angels (1989)

The next year comes the really funny film We Are no angels, in American style and not based on the previous English humor. The protagonists Robert de Niro and Sean Penn are really comedians (in the sense that they should) and the film, in addition to being pleasantly enjoyable, causes a lot of laughter. Demi Moore comes to fill up as a cherry on the cake.

The Miracle (1991)

I consider "Miracle" to be the first film that the Irish director puts a real directorial touch on. After the previous havaledziki films, here it deals with a serious issue, although the film has several doses of humor (but stars the drama). A kid falls in love with the wrong milf. Terrible femme fatale Beverly D 'Angelo, who got involved with the wrong kid. Because finally an unexpected oedipus unfolds, in which the young man has dived to the punches.
This movie was probably a prelude to what would follow.

The Crying Game (1992)

Here we have the ultimate. Neil Jordan gives us a great inspiration for one of the best movies of the 90. I will not say much about the film, those who have not seen it I think you are losing. However, I deal with my favorite subject of the Irish Army, and the ups and downs, especially from the medium, are continuous. Stephen Rea present and in this film, I fatefully pressed Jaye Davidson into the role of Dil and Forest Whitaker starring at the start.

Interview with the vampire (1994)

Return to the cinema of the fantasy for the Irish director, with a film-station in the films that refer to vampires. It is perhaps the most well-directed and "full" film of its kind. With a cast that breaks bones, with Tom Cruise vampire, Brat Pitt vampire, Antonio Banderas vampire !!! Amazing kid (then) Kirsten Dunst, who in recent years has made a career in Spiderman movies. In some places it draws enough, in some it sells madness but it is a vampire movie, what are you waiting for?

Michael Collins (1996)

And again in the Irish element. Not about the IRA this time, but a film - a tribute to Michael Collins, the man who is believed to have laid the foundations for Ireland to emerge from the UK and become an independent country (with the loss of Northern Ireland, of course, never joined with the rest of the island). Historical film with Liam Neeson in the leading role. Historically, it's worthwhile to see.

The Butcher Boy (1997)

The following year, Neil Jordan directs the Butcher Boy. An incredible junior, Eammon Owens, who then played in the extraordinary The Magdalene Sisters, gives recitals. The film takes the tongue to Catholicism, fake self-discipline, petty bourgeois, and all that makes many behave falsely and many others can not do what they want. A movie with many messages, but very much given by the brilliant Irishman.

In Dreams (1999)

A psychological thriller, starring (Annette Bening) to see future killings in her dreams, and after losing her daughter and husband, she does her best to prevent the worst. Not something special, something we have never seen before. Generally well-groomed thriller but trivial.

The End of the Affair (1999)

Without a long distance from In Dreams he went to the cinemas and the End of a Relationship. The Irish recruits great names like Ralph Fiennes and Jylianne Moore to give us a film (in essence) of jealousy, love, passion, passion and marital need. Without great interpretations the film is considered a classic film of the genre. It is characteristic that Stephen Rea has starred again, who has played almost all of Jordan's films so far.

The Good Thief (2002)

At about the same time that Ocean's Eleven was being released in theaters, with the parade of stars, the Irish director was releasing "Good luckA movie that also deals with a robbery in a casino, specifically on the Riviera of Monte Carlo, one day before the Grand Prix (this is the situation, since in a few days we have the Grand Prix of Monte Carlo). The robbery is very clever , inspired by Nick Nolte.Another big name in the film is Ralph Fiennes, who also starred in the previous film. Here in a small role. Also, Koustouritsa also appears as an actor. The music of the film is very good. .

Breakfast on Pluto (2005)

"Breakfast on Pluto" is the "biography" (if I can describe it that way) of a transvestite, who travels to a troubled (due to riots) Ireland and leaves for London, where he believes he will "find his peace" . Anyway, things are not rosy there either ... Cillian Murphy is very good in the role of Patrick Braden (Patrick / Paddy / Patricia).
Although the film does not have a terrible and terrible affair, director Jordan is the top in this film. Very good shots, impeccably directed, generally if he had directed another script then we would be talking about a great movie. And music is impeccable.

The brave one (2007)

And an American by the Irish director. A movie that I do not think is different from other good police thrillers (we are not talking about movies that are rubbish). Jodie Foster in the role of the one who was abused but also lost her partner by a gang in Central Park. And she undertakes to take the law into her own hands, while policeman Terrence Howard seeks to "find the ball" that was lost. Although the film is not something special, it is typical of the Irishman that after so many years of directing, he can "travel" without stress from Sligo to Monte Carlo, from Derry to New York and so on . Not to mention the "Interview with a Vampire" that "traveled" us around the world in a film.

Ondine (2009)

While the previous movie had no trace of fantasy, this is a completely comic-film here. Imagination in power. Jordan returns to the ground and directs the adventure of a fisherman in Cork. Who is fishing for Ondine. From now on, a tangle is messed up with the selkie myth, alcoholism, illnesses, religious noises and so on. I do not mention them because magic will be lost.
I only mention that selkie is called mythological women-seals but Ondine only as a seal would not characterize it. Mexican Alicja Bachleda is a guesthouse.

Byzantium (2012)

Like Jarmusch, Jordan in his latest film deals with vampires. But he does it in a special way. Not with ordinary vampires. Here we are dealing with something different. The direction, especially in the beginning, is based on the "madness" of Lynch but somewhere the Irishman loses it and I think the film becomes meaningless in the end.

YG1 I think this is the very fourth Irish movie (from 15 she has directed) in which Stephen Rea's compatriot does not play !!

Y.2 Dating in September ....

Grade: 4 / 10

Greta (2018)

The latest Irish film is very good. Not something original as an idea, but a very good psychological thriller, with wonderful interpretations by Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz. Definitely worth a look.
A widow tries to "enter" the lives of young girls, giving meaning to her miserable life. But this enforcement sometimes becomes excessive and leads to extreme situations .....
