Adelson, the son of a taxi driver, grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and from the age of 12 he began selling newspapers.
His Forbes profile says that for many years after leaving City College of New York, he acquired a fortune by manipulating vending machines, selling newspaper advertisements, helping small businesses enter the stock market and build apartments. In the Great Depression, he lost almost all of his property but managed to collect most of it in the years to come.
He now runs Las Vegas Sands, the largest casino in the world, and is considered the most important US donor, according to Forbes.
In fact, no one else in history has succeeded in becoming so wealthy-and as fast as-Sheldon Adelson. In December of 2004, the company of Las Vegas Sands Corp. was introduced to the stock market and in the next two years its capitalization was launched at 17,5 billion dollars! In other words, it gained almost 1 a million dollars an hour, 24 hours a day, including weekends and celebrations!
