Belize's largest island, Ambergris Kay, a popular scuba diving destination, is at the top of the list of the 10 best islands in the world in a traveler survey published today.
The western Caribbean country, which has the second largest coral reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, "defeated" another Caribbean destination, St. John in the US Virgin Islands, and was at the top of the list compiled by TripAdvisor group.
Third place went to the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora in the Pacific Ocean, which is surrounded by a lagoon and a reef and is popular for its hotels with stake-based bungalows.
"Ambergris Kay has hundreds of impressive limestone caves, meandering waterfalls, and rainforests," said TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw in a statement.
TripAdvisor's list of the world's best islands was based on millions of reviews and ratings from international tourists on its travel website last year.
The European island with the highest score included in the list is Santorini, with its beaches with black volcanic sand, its whitewashed houses painted white and its stunning views of the sea and the volcano.
Santorini is also first in a separate list of the 10 best European islands where other Greek islands, such as Kefalonia, Naxos, and Zakynthos, occupied important positions.
