Super Cup: The first title of the season

Analysis and predictions for the two semi-finals of the Super Cup that lead to the final on Sunday between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos!

The Greek Super Cup is held this year in Rhodes where the first title of the season will be decided. Teams are working feverishly to improve their level of readiness and the various problems that arise are just part of the game. Nevertheless, the potential clash of the two "eternals" in the final of the tournament is raising interest.

The Colossus of Rhodes opens a new chapter with Ilias Papatheodorou at the helm. On the island they create a completely new team being aware that last year's excellent course is not easy to repeat. As in the tenure of Ilias Kanzouris, patience and enough time will be needed.

In contrast to what we saw in AEK, coach Papatheodorou turned to new kids regarding the positions of the foreigners. He chose mostly rookies who will come to a tough and tactically advanced league to show what they can do. These are athletes from very good college programs, who will be invited to take their first professional step in Greece and in the Stoiximan Basket League.

Sasha Stefanovic is the Colossus player to watch out for this season. Born in Indiana, with Serbian roots, the 24-year-old shooting wing had a remarkable career at the great local Purdue program. This is a kid with a very good perimeter shot. Next to him we will see Brigham Young's 24-year-old point guard, Alex Barcello. This is another athlete who has perimeter execution appeal as he can produce mostly off the dribble (unlike Stefanovic who works more off the ball). In Malik Osborne, too, the Colossus people believe they have found Florida State's next great forward. Let's not forget that this is a program that has produced players like Chris Singleton and Okaro White.

Knowing the difficulty of the undertaking, the people of Rhodes brought to the island experienced athletes who will carry the team through the difficulties. The trio of Katsivelis-Giannopoulos-Moreira will have this role. The presence also of a scoring guard like TJ Starks (very good pass from Turkey and Lithuania last year) and the arrival of Marquis Teague (brother of Jeff Teague) creates optimism for the season that is just starting.

Panathinaikos goes to Rhodes with its own problems. Nate Walters' injury will rule the American out of those games. This is the worst possible absence at the moment as Walters gave the Greens another breath at the start of the season with his experience and quality. This injury came to add to the problem of Marius Grigonis who is gradually trying to recover. We are talking about the main backcourt of the team and about two of the players who this year will be responsible for managing the largest volume of decisions in the offensive part.

In this way, Dejan Radonic will be forced to give a vital role from the start to Mateusz Ponitka who will probably step up to the "ace" to fill the gap, flanking Paris Lee. At the same time, in the two days of Rhodes, the greens will need the step up of an athlete from the second line of the rotation. We are of course referring to the young core of the team, namely George and Panagiotis Kalaitzakis, Lefteris Mantzoukas and Nikos Hougaz. This mini-tournament and the eventual match against Olympiakos is a great opportunity for these kids.

Despite their absences, the greens are clearly superior in quality against the opponent. They have a significant advantage in the racket with Papagianni and Gudaitis, which they will try to exploit from the beginning, while in a game of this nature, the presence of Derrick Williams can be decisive.

Prometheus is making a strong comeback this year, having created a very interesting ensemble under Makis Giatras. The Patrini moved smartly in the summer in the market, even managing to complete transfer strikes which caused a sensation.

Former Pacers guard Joe Young will be one of the attractions of the Stoiximan Basket League this season. His ability in the personal phase and overall in scoring is indisputable and his potential is great. It remains to be seen how he will adapt (and to what extent he will succeed) his game against the physical European defenses. Apart from Young, the acquisition of Arnoldas Kulboka was a pleasant surprise. The Lithuanian shooting forward did not get the opportunity he was looking for from the Hornets and is returning to Europe. He is a talented player at a very good age, who has the prospect of quickly rising to Euroleague level.

Overall, the Patras team created a quality roster that has the productive potential to compete with teams from higher ranks. Add Cowan Jr. of Aris in the backcourt and Vassilis Muratos next to Ghika and Simpson. The experienced duo of Kaklamanakis-Tsairelis will flank the young Hellems (another shooting forward) and Conditt IV in the "drawing room".

Patrinoi will rely on speed and peripheral shooting again this year, aiming for the top four of the Stoiximan Basket League. Their style and the quality of specific units guarantee a good show.

The champion Olympiacos goes to Rhodes as the big favorite for the first title of the season. In addition to their superiority in terms of quality, the red and whites have kept the constants, the core body and the same philosophy as last year, a situation that gives them a significant advantage in terms of readiness and homogeneity at the start of the season.

Giorgos Bartzokas is patiently waiting for the return of Kostas Sloukas, hoping that soon the team's absence list will be white. He knows that he will need a good energetic game against Prometheus (the teams met a few days ago in a friendly where the red and whites won 72-81) to capitalize on his competitive superiority.

The pair of Walkup-Makissik in transition and the high line will be the main weapons of the red and whites in Rhodes. After all, Prometheus does not have the "cubes" in the racket to compete with Fal, Black and Boloboi. It is precisely for this reason (combined with the depth and production potential of Giatras' many peripherals) that Prometheus will not be afraid to run and play from the three-point line. The peripheral defense will therefore be the key for Olympiakos who will try to lock down the shooters of Patrina and one with a game of Young. Clearly, the Piraeus team has the tools to achieve this.
